DAKS: Building the Future with Plumbing Apprenticeships in Kent
DAKS Hacks: Building the Future with Plumbing Apprenticeships in Kent
At DAKS Plumbing Ltd, community commitment goes beyond pipes and boilers—it’s about people. Owner Darren has long believed that building a strong business starts with building up others. That’s why he’s made it a core part of his mission to train and support local apprentices, offering hands-on experience, mentoring, and a pathway to a successful career in plumbing.
“The industry is facing a real skills shortage,” says Darren. “And the best way we can tackle that is by passing on what we’ve learned. It’s not just about fixing leaks—it’s about creating professionals who respect the trade and the customer.”
Over the years, Darren has helped shape numerous apprentices into fully qualified plumbers—some of whom have gone on to start their own businesses. Now, DAKS Plumbing proudly welcomes two new apprentices, Peter and Louis, who represent the future of plumbing apprenticeships in Kent.
Meet Peter: A Story of Determination and Drive
Peter, 18, has faced more challenges than most. Diagnosed with high-functioning autism and ADHD at age 9, he often felt misunderstood in school—but he never let that stop him.
After earning qualifications in Health & Safety in Construction and Construction Skills at Kite College in Sittingbourne, Peter discovered his passion for plumbing. He gained his CSCS card, completed an Introduction to Plumbing course, and will begin his City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Plumbing this September.
Despite struggling to find companies willing to offer experience, Peter connected with Darren, who saw his potential right away.
“Darren gave me a chance,” Peter says. “I’ve already learned so much, and I’m truly grateful to be starting my apprenticeship with DAKS Plumbing. I feel like I’ve finally found the right place to grow.”
Peter’s determination and attention to detail are already proving invaluable on site—a reminder that opportunity and support can unlock incredible talent.
Meet Louis: From Struggle to Opportunity
Like Peter, Louis faced an uphill battle breaking into the industry. After contacting more than 50 plumbing firms and one-man bands, he finally got the response he’d been hoping for—from Darren at DAKS Plumbing.
“It’s really hard finding an apprenticeship these days,” Louis explains. “Out of my whole college class, only two of us have actual placements. Darren gave me a real shot.”
Louis loves the variety of plumbing work and the challenge of problem-solving. His goal is to become confident enough to take on jobs independently while continuing to learn from Darren and the rest of the DAKS team.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how I progress. DAKS has already taught me a lot.”
Why Apprenticeships Matter at DAKS Plumbing
Training apprentices isn’t just a box to tick—it’s part of DAKS Plumbing’s DNA. Darren ensures every apprentice learns not only the technical skills of the trade but also how to treat customers’ homes with respect and professionalism.
“When they qualify, they won’t just be great plumbers—they’ll be massive assets to the business and brilliant ambassadors for the trade,” Darren explains.
Building a Brighter Future, One Apprentice at a Time
By investing in young people like Peter and Louis, DAKS Plumbing is helping secure the future of the trade in Kent. Apprenticeships don’t just train plumbers—they change lives, provide stability, and strengthen local communities.
